Celebrating 50 Years in Nkamba - Kayonza, Where It All Began

August 4th, 1975. A quiet spark was lit in a small room in Nkamba. That spark was the birth of BPR, founded on a bold yet humble mission: to bring banking closer to the people and empower communities through financial inclusion.

Fast forward 50 years later, to the very same date, yesterday, August 4th, 2025, we returned to the exact place where it all began. But this time, not to open an account, but to open doors of opportunity.

In Nkamba, we transformed a former BPR branch, the very first, into something deeply symbolic and practical: a community space where women and men can gather to learn, tailor, train, and thrive. This was more than just a gesture. We equipped the space with 20 sewing machines, fabrics, and all the materials needed to support hands-on tailoring training for the local community.

And to sprinkle some magic on this already special day, we were joined by Mr. Nsengiyumva Louis, the very first customer who opened the very first BPR account back in 1975. His presence reminded us of how far we’ve come, and how powerful loyalty and trust can be across generations.

Speaking at the event, our Managing Director Patience Mutesi said, “Returning to our roots is not just a celebration of where we started, it’s a reaffirmation of our promise to serve and empower. This space reflects our past, but even more importantly, it shapes our future.”

The Governor of the Eastern Province, Pudence Rubingisa, graced us as Guest of Honor and praised BPR’s deep community spirit: “Today is more than a commemoration, it’s a powerful reminder that when institutions grow with their people, they create lasting impact.”

Our Board Chairman, Mr. George Rubagumya, captured the essence of the day when he said: “What we launch here today is not only a tribute to our past, but a declaration of intent, to keep walking alongside our communities, one empowering step at a time.”

This wasn’t just a celebration of 50 years. It was a homecoming. A moment of gratitude. And most importantly, a renewed commitment to keep transforming lives - together.
